Diwali 2023 at Educare: Part – I (“ভূত চতুর্দশী” Celebration)

“Education, like light, illuminates the path to knowledge, dispelling the shadows of ignorance and opening up a world of understanding.”

Diwali is the festival of light, and we believe as an educational institute, that we carry the beacons of light. We had meticulously planned a grand celebration for this year’s Diwali, in three equally exciting parts. Part – I was “ভূত চতুর্দশী” celebration, which is an integral part of Diwali Celebration in Bengal. The name translates to “Fourteenth of Ghosts”, and it is observed on the night before Kali Puja. It is believed that on this night, evil spirits (or negative energy) roam freely, and people light fourteen diyas (candles) to ward off these spirits. The significance of the number “fourteen” is associated with the lunar calendar, marking the night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Kartik.

We, at Educare International School, have mixed this colloquial Bengal tradition with the Western celebration of Halloween (which is observed on 31st of October every year, and this year was very close to our own Kali Puja celebrations). Our students took part in a Ghost Themed Costume Party based on the traditional ghosts of Bengal, and then completed the Halloween Themed Wall Decoration Challenge, all on 09/11/2023 (Thursday).
